Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors around that, not just his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
