The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
