In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
